How is everyone hanging during this lockdown summer? We’ve been daydreaming about the moment when we feel it is safe to visit our beloved Happiest Place on Earth, strolling through Adventureland with Dole Whip in hand. Ahhh!
In the meantime, we, like many others, have been learning to be innovative at home during this pandemic. In April, the Disney Parks app released an easy-to-make recipe of the signature treat, and we couldn’t wait to recreate it.

Before making the recipe, we had a few questions when looking over the instructions.
IS DOLE WHIP VEGAN?
The official Disney Dole Whip recipe is known to be vegan and gluten-free. How closely will the DIY recipe be to the original? Will using a dairy-free ice cream yield the same results in consistency and taste?
HOW DO I GET THE SIGNATURE SOFT SERVE SWIRL?
It’s not a Dole Whip without the glorious, cascading ribbons of soft serve, right? Can our quarantine remake do justice of the instagrammable treat?
After some very tasty trial and error, we came up with a foolproof “remix,” if you will, of the classic Disney Dole Whip Recipe.
The secret to making your own creation look just as sweet? Popsicle molds (and a little bit of patience!) We even kicked it up a notch with some fun modifications.
Since this recipe is one to make ahead of time, it can be the perfect party treat to any Disneyland/Disneyworld-themed gathering (when lockdown has been lifted, of course!)
DOLE WHIP INGREDIENTS
Recipe yields 4-6 pops
- 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks
- 1 large scoop vanilla ice cream of your choice (non-dairy alternatives work!)
- 4 oz. pineapple juice
Optional, but if you’re feeling adventurous:
- Chamoy sauce to taste
- Magic Shell ice cream topping
HOW TO MAKE DOLE WHIP
To create the pineapple whip, combine ice cream, frozen pineapple chunks, and pineapple juice in a blender and mix until well combined. I have to admit, it does take a bit to evenly blend your ingredients, because there is little liquid to solid ratio.
FUN FACT: I worked at a smoothie shop for 2 years of my college career, and the trick to making your drink thicker is to add more fruit, and more juice to make it thin/runnier.
In this case, we want our dole whip thick and creamy, so don’t give up when you have to give your blender cup several shakes in between – it’ll be worth it!
As much as we tried to reproduce the soft serve swirl that the Dole Whip at Disney is famous for, we couldn’t quite get it to our liking – we even tried transferring our mix to a piping bag with a star tip, however, our “whip” sort of globbed out of the bag and our star tip gave a short-lived texture. Our fingers were also frozen 😝
Once you’ve gotten a proper arm workout with blending, here’s where the magic happens. Spoon your mixture into your popsicle molds, and let your freezer do its thing for several hours or overnight. Enjoy any extra liquid gold.
DOLE WHIP REMIX!
Here are a couple of suggestions to amp up your homemade Dole Whip.
For a tangy twist, add a drizzle of chamoy (salted plum and spice seasoning, a staple in Mexican cuisine) along the wall of your popsicle mold before adding the pineapple whip and freezing. It’s a refreshing variation and a must-try for mangonada lovers like ourselves! Keep in mind this sauce is packed with tart flavor, a little goes a long way.
For an indulgent mashup of beloved Disney delights, we poured our blended dole whip ingredients into this adorable Mickey-shaped popsicle mold (buy it here), and once frozen, coated in Magic Shell topping. An homage to the iconic Mickey Ice Cream bars, but with a Tiki Juice Bar twist!
PRO TIP: Drizzle coating over plate or bowl to catch any extra sauce, and use leftover sauce to coat the other side.
I used a bottle of Smucker’s Magic Shell, which contains milk. However, here is a recipe for vegan chocolate shell from one of my favorite vegan-friendly food blogs, Minimalist Baker.
We hope this easy, homemade Dole Whip can help hold you over until your next visit to The Happiest Place on Earth. Please tag us in your recreations – we’d love to see!
