CUSTOM FORTUNE COOKIES INGREDIENTS
Pre–made Fortune Cookies
Red Candy Melts
Gold Sprinkles
Edible Ink Markers
SUPPLIES
Microwave-safe Container
Toothpick
Paper
Scissors
Silicone Mat or Parchment Paper
STEP ONE: PREPARE PERSONALIZED FORTUNES
Using one of the fortunes as a template, cut out strips of paper and write a message using edible ink markers. I love being able to add a personal touch to your treats, and incorporating your own handwriting makes it that much more special. I wrote “You are Brave, Loyal and True,” which is an important theme in the Mulan live-action remake.
STEP TWO: PREPARE FORTUNE COOKIES
Because we are using pre-made ingredients to make these fortune cookies custom, we want to be careful in replacing the existing fortune with our own. This process can take a bit of practice, but it will be worth it!
With the fortune cookie seam side up, use your thumbs to very gently pry open a piece off the cookie. It may feel wrong deliberately breaking the cookie without eating it right away, but this customized fortune cookies recipe will show you how to conceal it like magic. Some cookies can be more stubborn than others and may require a soft twist using the tip of a butter knife.
STEP THREE: REPLACE FORTUNES
Carefully remove existing fortune from the cookie and replace it with your custom fortune. Repeat with remaining cookies and recycle original fortunes if possible.
STEP FOUR: SEAL COOKIES
Melt a small amount of candy melts in a microwave safe plastic container in 30-second increments at half power until coating is smooth throughout. With a toothpick, apply a strip of coating along the crack of the fortune cookie and reconnect the piece. Repeat with the other cookies and allow to dry completely before dipping.
STEP FIVE: DIP COOKIES
Add more candy melts to your container, enough to cover 1 inch of your custom fortune cookies. Carefully dip fortune cookies and shake off excess coating. Place cookies broken side down on silicone baking sheet or parchment paper.
STEP SIX: DECORATE COOKIES
After every 2 cookies, apply sprinkles while coating is still wet. I find it easier to pour desired sprinkles in a small dish and pinch/drizzle by hand.
BE CREATIVE!
You are not limited to the type of sprinkles or color of candy melts. I went with a red and gold theme in honor of the Mulan live action release. In Chinese culture, the color red represents happiness, and joy, while gold depicts good luck and beauty. If you’re a fellow fan of Mulan, I also did a costume / Disneybound look here!
I hope you enjoy our take on customizable fortune cookies! This recipe takes a bit of patience and practice, but it’ll be worth the handwritten surprise.
